November 22, 2013 Collyer may go over the top with the lifestyles of the poor and pitiful backdrop at times but she does get at the cycle of poverty and lack of opportunity that often is handed down from generation to generation.

SUNLIGHT JR. spotlights hard-working convenience store clerk Melissa (Naomi Watts) and her disabled boyfriend, Richie (Matt Dillon), who are trapped in a generational cycle of poverty.

At the store, Melissa must contend with both a jerk of a boss who harasses her sexually as well as a loony pill-pusher ex-boyfriend (Their lone escape is their healthy sex life, somewhat reminiscent of similar steamy scenes in "But when Richie gallantly offers Melissa another piece of bacon from his fast-food breakfast and says, in all sincerity, "For the baby," it is downright depressing. The movie consequently suffers from a lack of emotional resonance that's both unfortunate and disastrous...

I've said it time and again, and I shall say once more that the film tries a little too hard, whether when it's flavoring up its characters with flaws or when its flavoring up its drama with bleakness, and when you couple these ambitious mistakes with such lazy mistakes as dragging and underdevelopment, natural shortcomings are impossible to forget, at least until the film comes to its conclusion and ironically becomes hard to remember.



But at least the actors prove surprisingly compatible as a couple, providing welcome respite during what is an aggressively downbeat primer on the working poor.

The couple must come to grips with their dire financial situation while in the midst of an unplanned pregnancy and its subsequent challenges. By creating an account, you agree to the Once the light has faded, a slow, underdeveloped and sometimes overly bleak telling of a minimalist story, backed by characters of limited intrigue and likability, render the final product underwhelming, while highlights in visual style, direction and writing, and a pair of strong performances by Naomi Watts and Matt Dillon secure "Sunlight Jr." as a fair, if forgettable character drama. I don't know if the film is quite as pessimistic as many are saying it is, but the fainthearted are sure to face a challenge, and if you can handle it, the almost manipulatively harsh storyline has some pretty worthy highlights, however sparse they may be behind a shallow story.
