We are 60m from a pair of bison, 800kg relics of the vast, wild woodland that covered much of Bison rest in the forest by day, emerging to feed when the light fades. As we look over lush fields and fens by the Biebrza river, dark shapes come snuffling into view – three, five, eventually 10 wild boar are feeding; then three elk appear, lazily grazing on the long grass, as eagles and storks wheel overhead.
