Raucher and Van Peebles frequently clashed on set, as Raucher intended the movie to be a satire of white, liberal America, whereas Van Peebles wanted to change Raucher's script to make it a Columbia was happy with the finished product, and the film was a financial success, leading the studio to offer Van Peebles a three-picture contract. My father would keep saying to me "Aren't you going to buy that movie?"

By the way, the light-skinned makeup on Cambridge is about as convincingly white on him as it was on Eddie Murphy in the "White Like Me" short film he did on "Saturday Night Live", that is, not much. One morning, Jeff wakes up to find that his pigment has changed. A highly intelligent man in real life, Godfrey lets this shine through in this film. Dated, yes. He then goes without the make-up when his character changes into a black man.Interestingly, before Van Peebles got the directors job, the studio had told him that they were planning to cast a white actor like Alan Arkin or Jack Lemmon to play the part.
However not Van Peebles worst movie--that goes to "Sweet Sweetbacks Bada** Song". I mean, how can you not laugh at the attempts Godfrey keeps making to turn himself "back" like drinking lots of milk or putting his face in plaster. And so I waited for a few years.

Melvin Van Peebles is a hero, let's not be coy about it.

And wait till you see how Three Stooges regular supporting player Emil Sitka reacts when he gets attacked by Jeff over some new sunlamps! That is what makes "Watermelon Man" so special.

Jeff Gerber lives in an average suburban neighborhood with his seemingly liberal housewife Althea, who tolerates her husband's character flaws out of love. Yes, I realize he was one of the first black independent directors--it does NOT make him a good director though. Watermelon man caught me by surprise and I'm so glad!!! However, a film that on the surface seems a comedy relays an extremely important about the treatment of Black American's in the 60's & 70'. While I would love us all to get along, I appreciate the honesty and realness the film depicts of what happens when getting along is made impossible when one group dehumanizes another. It's sad how, over 30 years later, how timely it still is in a lot of ways. At that, however, if you do not have a strong taste for grotesques--in a formal sense ("outlandish or bizarre; ludicrous or incongruous distortion")--you may not enjoy the film as much as I did. And a VERY funny one.

Just the like the Yuppies of the 80's that wore sneakers to work then changed shoes. The script hits all the jokes you expect and then goes nowhere. Thanks to so-called political correctness, books/films/television shows once deemed acceptable have been idiotically re-branded 'casual racism from less enlightened times'. Like in Sweet Sweetback..., Melvin Van Peebles doesn't go for the obvious commentary on race relations; I loved the scene at the end when the wife admits that she's "liberal to a point." Anyway it's a gem of a movie!!!! The main problems here--the direction, the script and boy is it dated!
