July 22, 2007 Critics invented new words to over-praise this melodrama set in the world of con artists. Best to savor The Grifters for its handsome design -- the picture looks as clean as a Hockney landscape -- and its juicy performances. Updating the setting to contemporary Los Angeles, the film follows a trio of con artists who are intent on out-foxing each other. This is a film that isn't liked by many due to its pacing and lack of tangible plot, but I found to be quite mesmerizing for the most part.

Even for the con, life ain't free. It starts off a little slow as the three lead characters are introduced but the pace picks up in the proceedings.
