Tragic, on a very small scale. The author tried to show what character in the book thought and how interpreted situation - quite a novel approach in art of writing.

Brian Moore (1921–1999) was born into a large, devoutly Catholic family in Belfast, Northern Ireland. One of those books which is exhilarating to read, but the people you're reading about are so desperate and miserable it's depressing if you think of it on their terms, so it produces a curiously mixed effect. 8 out of 9 found this helpful. The shoe eyes staring at Judith Hearne throughout the novel, accusing, laughing along, leering, laughing at. So, if you are yourself depressed or otherwise vulnerable, you might want to think twice about seeing this one. I'm assuming the success of the novel Judith Hearne (written by a 27 year old Brian Moore, 27!) She is simply wonderful, in one of her last great performances, and the film is worth seeing for her work in it alone. I had no idea what a treasure I was receiving.
As to Bob - he is too sophisticated for the part unlike our hero - primitive sort of a chap with ugly motives. It’s a book I’ve been saving for quite a while, thinking that it might be my kind of read. "The Lonely Passion of Judith Hearne" features some really amazing acting. Perfect in length, character development, plot, the authenticity of setting, dialogue - everything. There's nothing badly done about this film of Brian Moore's book, 'The Lonely Passion of Judith Hearn'; but also no apparent grounds for hope, even false hope, at any point in the proceedings until the very closing reel. However, to call Smith satisfactory would not be justice at all. The Lonely Passion of Judith Hearne is a hard sell. In this film you will also see one of the very rare times where Dame Maggie really lets rip, with a nerve shattering screech of a shout. Just as it's hard to make an interesting film about boredom, so an entertaining film about unhappiness is a tricky proposition; but (to give an example of another film set in historic Ireland) Alan Parker's version of 'Angela's Ashes' has a life to it that is lacking here, where the title tells us exactly what we are going to get: two painful hours of "lonely passion", utterly unremitted. I wouldn't call this a tender or sentimental story, but rather, a devastating treatment of Belfast's most vulnerable class.

Ah, this is a sad film. This is the story from the other side, a life crushed into conformity. It is a marvelous, sad movie, and it has two of the best actors ever -- Maggie Smith and the incomparable Bob Hoskins. Tragic, on a very small scale. Contemporary young adult literature has often led the way in depicting the real-life issues facing teens from all backgrounds. Actors' piece about midlife romance and misunderstandings, adapted from Brian Moore's novel by Peter Nelson, is careful and leisurely-paced, unfolding without much melodramatic fuss. She has few skills and is full of the prejudices and pieties of her genteel Belfast upbringing. Judith’s clinginess and desperation is awkward to read about if you know someone like that. A shy Irish spinster with a weakness for alcohol and religion entertains daydreams of marrying a (strictly small time) Dublin salesman, until she discovers (too late) that his interest is purely mercenary. Slightly reminiscent of Jean Rhys, except even more hopeless and drab -- Moore's prose style is good, but not as diamond-hard and faceted as hers, and the Rhys women at least get to rebel.

The film may be a bit flawed on some levels, but is still a masterpiece. I don't think Maggie Smith has ever failed in a role.
