TruTone is Crossway's imitation leather. Still his legacy of the red-letter Bible is his silent, largely uncredited monument. Although the NASB has been my preferred translation, I've always liked the ESV as well, and honestly having this Bible along with the Reader's Bible, I'm I was sent a copy that is bound with the TruTone binding that is stitched around the edges. As Piper says, it’s the RSV with the theological problems fixed. Red letter editions seem to me to be an example of how misplaced piety can get in the way of what's really important -- in this case, a readable text. The ESV margins look almost as wide as the Zondervan. Don't get me wrong, compared to some of the other insertions, red ink is a minor distraction. Is that really the case, or is that a trick of the perspective. I don't have a strong preference, but I also think that it's easy to skip over the black letters when you have the red letters popping out of the page. Now, I would have It is also worth noting that there is not line matching and a fair amount of bleed-through if this sort of thing bothers you. I like this layout better than the center column cross-reference style (or even my Side-Column reference NASB which I'll show you in a moment). Enhancements that contribute to this goal are worth exploring, while those that detract from it -- no matter how pious or well-intentioned -- ought to fade away.I'm not against red letter editions, not with the same vehemence I have toward verse-per-line ones. I know they make it in both a Genuine Leather and Bonded Leather edition. A nice dark crimson can look attractive on the page, but even at its best, four columns of tiny red print can be a bit of a strain. This Bible is a Red Letter edition, which is something I have no strong feelings about either way as long as the text is readable and not a faded pink-red-orange color. Red letter edition Bibles seem to be popular in the US. There is a single ribbon marker, and the only thing I would wish for is a second ribbon. Cross-references are located at the bottom of the right-hand column and footnotes span the bottom of the page. What's interesting to me, assuming this story isn't apocryphal, is how one man's rather eccentric and literal-minded notion came to be embraced to such an extent that there are people today who believe that not to print the words of Christ in red is somehow a sacrilege.

What I am suggesting is that design choices be made with a certain end in mind, and where the Bible is concerned, that end ought to be a pleasant reading experience. But it does seem to have what could be called occasionally idiosyncratic renderings, particularly in the OT. It's worth noting that the maps aren't printed on shiny paper, and I think this is a nice touch for improved readability. I also want to mention that this Bible has a lifetime guarantee from Crossway. Although Crossway provided this Bible to me for free to review, I was not in any way required to provide a positive review. The first red-letter Bible was published in 1900, and the practice still seems mostly limited to the most major languages. Whenever I hear people complaining about the difficulty of understanding what they've read in Scripture, I always wonder whether a de-numbered, de-referenced, uncluttered, uninterrupted experience of the text itself would have made a difference. The practice of putting Jesus’ words in red is wrong! Used tastefully for emphasis, the combination of black and red is a typographical classic, so I have no complaint on aesthetic grounds.
